![]() Follow these tips for mounting other heavy objects on plaster walls as well. Then follow the mount’s instructions for put the TV on the tightly-secured mount. Then put a level on the top of the mount and hand-tighten the rest, making sure to keep it level. Put the mount on the wall and drive the four lag bolts about 99% of the way in with an impact driver. Once you know where the studs are, mark where the holes of the mount are and drill pilot holes. You can mark where the nails are, which will let you know where the stud is. Use the stud finder by slowly rubbing it along the wall until it finds a nail. That means that if you can find the nails, you have found the stud. Into each stud will be horizontal lath nailed into it. For that, you need a strong magnet stud finder. Because of how thick a plaster wall is and the fact that it is made of wood and plaster, a regular stud finder won’t find the studs. ![]() The plaster dries to form a hard, smooth surface suitable for finishing, first. The lath is then embedded with three layers of wet plaster. Four-foot-long strips of wood lath, typically 1-inch wide, are nailed directly to the open wall studs. With a drywall wall, you can use a stud finder. Lath and plaster refer to an interior wall construction technique that typically predates the 1940s. Unlike most construction adhesives, Loctite has a spreadable, mayonnaise-like consistency. Then I applied a couple of tubes’ worth of Loctite all-purpose construction adhesive to the back side of the lath. Plaster and lath wall How to find stud in plaster wallįinding a stud in a plaster wall is a bit different than finding a stud in a drywall. I vacuumed the plaster dust off the wall and cut a sheet of 1/2-in. Once you find the studs, you can drill pilot holes through the plaster and through the stud, then drive a screw or in the case of a TV mount, a large lag bolt. Still, you must secure the mount to the studs for sufficient holding power. Mounting a modern TV is not as difficult as it used to be. For heavier objects, you need to find the stud. For light objects, you can put up a piece of painter’s tape and drill a hole for a plastic anchor to put a screw in. Mounting into plaster is a little different than drywall because it is brittle, hard, and difficult to find the studs for heavy objects. This was a common way to build walls several decades ago before gypsum board and drywall became much more common. How to mount into plasterĪ plaster wall is made up of horizontal pieces of wood called laths nailed into vertical studs, over which a thick material called plaster is applied. Since the TV is held by two brackets, if you can fit it in a location where both brackets are screwed into the wall studs I would think that would sufficient. This post may contain affiliate links. I worse cases I would open the area behind the intended TV placement and maybe add some additional support. I would recommend spanning of at least 3 studs if possible but here again it will depend on the weight of you TV. The studs should be between 16 and 18 inch centers however may be as wide as 24" depending on who built the wall. If bridging multiple wall studs with a 3/4 inch thich piece of plywood you will get most of your holding power by lagging into the wall studs themselves. It is also not a very good anchor point for attaching your plywood. ![]() This makes the plaster unsuited to hold anything that weight much over 5 to 10 lbs. ![]() Over time it becomes brittle and becomes loose. The plaster is attached by the plaster that passes between the laths and when it becomes dry it bonds itself to the laths. The problem with lath and plaster walls is that the laths are attached to the wall studs with small nails making the laths very brittle and easy to let go of the wall studs. Brian I see nothing wrong with your plan. ![]()
